Merle Haggard - The Bottle Let Me Down

The Bottle Let Me Down

"The Bottle Let Me Down" is a song written and recorded by American country music artist Merle Haggard and The Strangers. It was released in August 1966 as the second single from the album Swinging Doors. The song peaked at number three on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles.

Hank Williams III recorded his version of the song, although it was never released in a studio album. It was, however, released in 2012 without Williams' permission by his former label, Curb Records. Williams had become estranged from Curb by this time, and he did not support Curb's decision to release old material without his permission. Instead, Williams encouraged his fans not to buy any of Curb's music.

Merle Haggard - The Bottle Let Me Down lyrics

Each night I leave the bar room when it's over

Not feeling any pain at closing time

But tonight your memory found me much too sober

Couldn't drink enough to keep you off my mind

Tonight the bottle let me down

And let your memory come around

The one true friend I thought I'd found

Tonight the bottle let me down

I've always had a bottle I could turn to

And lately I've been turnin' every day

But the wine don't take effect the way it used to

And I'm hurtin' in an old familiar way

Tonight the bottle let me down

And let your memory come around

The one true friend I thought I'd found

Tonight the bottle let me down

Tonight the bottle let me down
