Paper Rosie:
Song written by the singer and composer Dallas Harms. Gene Watson, recorded the song on November 18, 1976, and was released in January 1977, would be included on the album, Paper Rosie (Capitol 1977), the song would reach the number 3 position in American charts and the number one position in the Canadian lists. But before recording it Gene, Dallas Harms recorded it in 1975, reaching the number 21 position in the country charts of Canada, the song was included in what would be his first album, Paper Rosie (Broadland 1975), Canada Country Awards, award as single of the year (1975).
Dallas is already well-established in Canada, and now he is on the threshold of impressing the world (but gently always very graciously) with his songs, spirit and voice. It was at the 1976 Big Country Awards, which took place at the Plaza Hotel, Edmonton, Alberta, that things really started to happen in Dallas. He picked up the Single Of The Year award for Georgia’s I’m Cheating On You Tonight (the previous year he won the same award for Paper Rosie), when he was introduced to Frank Jones, the r & r man of Capitol Records. Nashville
During the night, Jones heard some songs that Dallas had written, including Paper Rosie. He immediately became enthusiastic about the song, took it back to Nashville and had trouble persuading Gene Watson to record it. Paper Rosie became one of Watson’s biggest hits in the United States and it was also the song that introduced the country music singer from Texas to the British fans.
The story of the song begins in a tavern on the road. Here, the person who buys a paper rose from an old seller is the one who tells the story. Soon after, he hears the ringing of bells and the singing of a choir. In a nearby church, he realizes that a funeral is taking place. When he hears that the choir sings “Paper Rosie”, he becomes conscious. Then it seems to him that the funeral is for the woman who sold him the rose.
The clue implies that it was actually the spirit of the woman who sold him the paper flower. Through this clue, we can see Watson’s talent. In the music industry, very few musicians can paint an image in your mind by just singing.

Gene Watson – Paper Rosie Lyrics
The sun goes down in Calvin county
Neon lights from an old beer sign
Shown through the window out on the sidewalk
As I walked in to pass the time
I looked around, sat down at a table
Ordered beef on rye and a glass of wine
And through the door came a little old lady
She was selling paper roses and they only cost a dime
Paper Rosie, paper Rosie
She sold you paper Roses
But they only cost a dime
Silver hair that’s lost its’ gold
Trembling hand as she passed the rose
Red Crepe paper, made nature’s bouquet
Help a little old lady buy a rose today
I took the rose from her trembling hand
With eyes of age, she smiled and walked away
Like a breath of spring I could smell the rose
It came alive and I heard her say
Buy my Roses, pretty roses
They’re only made of paper
But they only cost a dime
I went to look for her outside
A spray of roses lay by her side
The sky lit up and the choir sang
A thousand voices as the church bells rang
They sang Rosie (Rosie), paper Rosie (Rosie)
She sold you paper Roses
But they only cost a dime
Paper Rosie (Rosie), paper Rosie (Rosie)
She sold you paper roses
But they only cost a dime
